Bassinet Mattress - Is Organic Worth It?
Americans are going green. They're giving up plastic shopping bags, installing solar panels, buying clothing made of organic cotton, looking for organic food, and the list goes on. If you're expecting a baby, would buying a chemical free bassinet mattress be possible?
Chemicals used in the manufacture of a bassinet mattress is a concern to many families. Chemicals have been linked to a variety of diseases, including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Chemicals have often been known to trigger allergic reactions.
It is possible to find a bassinet mattress made from natural materials such as organic cotton or organic plant material, is strong and water proof. This type of bassinet mattress is expensive. It can cost up to three times the price of a non-organic counterpart.
Is it worth the money?
Every family is different. For example, if you're buying a new bassinet set, the bassinet mattress is included. Do you want to spend additional money at that time to buy a bassinet mattress that may cost more than the entire original set?
If you do purchase an organic bassinet mattress, make sure that it is machine washable. Read the label carefully. Make sure that with all the messy diapers and spit up that newborns produce, you'll be able to toss the mattress into the washer on a regular basis.
If buying an organic mattress is simply out of the budget, consider investing in a mattress pad and bedding made out of organic cotton.
